Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) was the 8th president of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841. A skilled politician and organizer, he played a key role in founding the Democratic Party and shaping the modern American political system. Before his presidency, Van Buren served as a U.S. senator, governor of New York, secretary of state, and vice president under Andrew Jackson. His presidency was overshadowed by the Panic of 1837, a severe economic depression that damaged his popularity. Van Buren supported Jacksonian principles such as limited government, states’ rights, and opposition to a national bank. Though he failed to win reelection, his political acumen and party-building efforts left a lasting impact on American democracy and political organization.
